Thankyou AISHM for this outstanding article.
Last week I having a lunch break with my internship boss Matt, and while we were waiting for our food to come Matt asks me how I felt about the word tranny and my thoughts about the word. For myself I never gave the word tranny a second thought, the word tranny doesn’t actually apply to me as much as it applies to transgendered females.
I don’t agree with the word used to identify someone, or the use of the word in club events for example ‘tranny bingo’. I’ve never been to one of these events, however I have seen photos and to me they really look like men in drag. I don’t see the connection for the word tranny to be used, why don’t they call it bingo with balls or drag bingo.
I find the word in general very harsh and actually quiet offensive to some degree, although I don’t find that it applies to me I can understand how certain people in the transgender community would feel. That’s not the only word that is offensive to transgendered people, so I’ve made this list of words that you shouldn’t use. Unless you want to get punched in the face
DON’T USE:
– She-male
– He-she
– It
– Tranny
– Gender bender
– Transvestite
The fact that she-male and tranny make the list, actually allows me to cross reference this to pornography. The market for she-male and tranny pornography is massive, which creates this stigma around the word. And let’s face it, I don’t think anyone should call themselves a tranny or she-male to me it’s just degrading yourself. The word gender bender is the one word I actually hate to hear let alone say, I got called this a lot because I used to bend my gender. Actually I think through high school this word was always used to attack me from the other kids, and as for transvestite just avoid that word completely.
